You can now check if your PC is compatible with Windows 11 22H2

Windows 11 22H2 will begin rolling out in the fall of 2022 and is expected to offer a host of improvements as well as some new features. Windows 11 22H2 won't actually change the hardware requirements, but Microsoft has quietly enabled a registry that lets you check compatibility with upcoming updates.

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s first major operating system update in six years and was originally released in 2021. When Microsoft launched a new operating system and confirmed changes to hardware requirements, there was considerable concern surrounding controversial hardware compatibility.

The next update is coming and the good news is you can now easily verify compatibility. Performing a compatibility check to see if your computer supports Windows 11 version 22H2 is now fairly simple, according to a new registry hack the company quietly revealed.

Of course, we have a handy Windows PC Health Check to let you know if your device is compatible with the new operating system. If it's incompatible, you'll see a reason listed in the app, and Microsoft also provides links to support documentation for more information about compatibility issues.

However, you cannot use the PC Health Check tool to specifically check compatibility with Windows 11 22H2. Thankfully, a new registry key will reveal whether your device is capable of running Windows 11 22H2 (Fall 2022 Update). If you want to know the current status, use the following steps:

  1. Open Windows Registry Editor on your PC.
  2. In Registry Editor, click on the address bar and delete the address.
  3. Go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators
  4. To check compatibility with 22H2, open NI22H2 NI stands for "Nickel", and 22H2 stands for the updated version.
  5. If you double-click the value, you will notice " RedReason ". A value of NONE indicates that your device is ready for feature updates. In other words, Microsoft isn't blocking updates on your device, at least for now.
  6. If you see other values, you will not be able to upgrade. This value depends on compatibility issues. For example, if your device does not meet the hardware requirements, you will find out if the update is being blocked by an application. In fact, there is a string called "SystemDriveTooFull" that tells you the storage space available for the upgrade.
Based on this value, you can determine whether your device cannot meet the necessary storage requirements. For example, if the value is 1, your device does not have enough storage for 22H2 or later.

Microsoft is apparently pushing the registry key to Windows 10 and Windows 11 21H2 installations, and it should appear on devices in the coming days.
