It’s been almost two years since Apple announced its transition from Intel Macs to Apple Silicon, and while there are still two Intel-powered Macs in the lineup, the company is already developing the next wave of Macs powered by the new M2 chip. A new MacBook powered by the M2 chip will be released later this year.
Rumors about the next MacBook Air have been circulating online for quite some time, as multiple reports hinted at a completely redesigned laptop. The new MacBook Air will feature the newer M1 chip, but our reliable sources tell us that the machine is being developed using the new M2 chip.
The next-generation MacBook Air, codenamed J413, is expected to be released as a single version of the M2. As we detailed in our article about the new Mac mini , the M2 chip (known internally as "Staten") is based on the A15 chip. While it has the same eight-core CPU as the M1, the M2 will bring a more powerful 10-core GPU.
It's worth noting that the new M2 chip replaces the current entry-level M1, rather than the high-end M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra versions - so it won't necessarily perform better than those high-end chips. Of course, Apple will eventually launch higher-end versions of the new M2 chip, such as the M2 Pro (which will power one of the new Mac mini models).
Apple is currently developing M2 Pro, Max and Ultra, the latter of which is a 24-core CPU.
Rumors suggest that Apple will keep the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro around longer.
#The 13-inch MacBook Pro will also get a new model with an M2 chip. Under the codename J493, the machine is based on the current 13-inch MacBook Pro, which means it should retain the current design rather than get a new design from the high-end version.
Apple has been internally considering dropping the "Pro" name from the machine, which would become "MacBook." As such, it would be renamed the entry-level MacBook, which makes sense since a report last year claimed that the redesigned MacBook Air would be "slightly more expensive."
However, this year’s 13-inch MacBook may still be labeled as “Pro”. Like the MacBook Air, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro won't be available with an M2 Pro or other high-end chip.
While a release date is currently unknown, our sources tell us that both machines are in advanced stages of development, so will likely be released later this year .
Apple may launch new Apple Silicon Macs at WWDC 2022 in June, and more Macs will be launched by the end of this year.
