How to build and use Laravel

Apr 14, 2023 am 09:33 AM

Laravel is a popular PHP web application framework that has an easy-to-learn and use API and many powerful features such as Eloquent ORM, Router, and Blade template engine. In this article, we'll cover how to get started with Laravel.

Step One: Install Laravel
To start using Laravel, you need to install it on your computer. You can install it in one of two ways (global and local). Global installation allows you to easily create new projects anywhere, while local installation only works for specific projects.

The following are the steps for both methods:

Global installation:

  1. Install Composer dependencies
    Composer is a PHP dependency manager and autoloader , you need to use Composer to install its dependencies before installing Laravel. You can download Composer on the official website.
  2. Install Laravel
    You can install Laravel using the following command:
composer global require "laravel/installer"
Copy after login
  1. Confirm installation
    Use the following command to check whether Laravel has been successfully installed:
laravel new my-project
Copy after login

If you see the "Application created successfully" message, it means that global Laravel was installed successfully.

Local installation:

  1. Install Composer dependencies
    You also need to install Composer dependencies.
  2. Create a new project
    To create a new Laravel project, use the following command:
composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel my-project
Copy after login
  1. Confirm installation
    Use the following command to check if Laravel has been successful Installation:
php artisan serve
Copy after login

If you see the "Laravel development server started" message, it means that Laravel has been installed successfully.

Step Two: Configure the Database
Before you start building a web application with Laravel, you need to configure it for use with a database. You can use a database such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.

In Laravel, you can specify database credentials in the .env file. You can create a new .env file using the following command:

cp .env.example .env
Copy after login

By default, the database credentials in the .env file correspond to your local MySQL or PostgreSQL installation. In the .env file you should change the following lines to your database credentials:

DB_DATABASE=your_database_name
DB_USERNAME=your_database_username
DB_PASSWORD=your_database_password
Copy after login

Step Three: Create Routes and Controllers
Now that you have successfully installed and configured Laravel, next step is to create routes and controllers.

In Laravel, you can use the artisan command to quickly create controllers and routes. Please use the following command to create a new controller:

php artisan make:controller YourControllerName
Copy after login

This will create a new controller file in the app/Http/Controllers directory.

To create a new route, you can add the following code to the routes/web.php file:

Route::get('/your-route', 'YourControllerName@methodName');
Copy after login

In the above code, "your-route" is the code you will want to use for The route defined by this controller method, where "YourControllerName" is the name of the controller class you just created and "methodName" is the name of the controller method you want to call through this route.

Step 4: Create Views
In Laravel, you can easily create beautiful views using the Blade template engine. During development, you will create view directories and files in the resources/views directory. You can create a new view using the following command:

php artisan make:view YourViewName
Copy after login

This will create a new view file named "YourViewName" in the resources/views directory.

To render a view in a controller method, use the following code:

return view('your-view-name');
Copy after login

In the above code, "your-view-name" is the name of the view file you want to render.
