Microsoft has been working hard to change almost every feature we use on Windows, from the taskbar to notifications. With Windows 11 KB5025310 available in the beta channel, Microsoft is changing the way the print screen key works, i.e. its default behavior.

If your laptop has a dedicated Print Screen key, you can press it to instantly take a screenshot and save it to your clipboard. You can paste the screenshot into any application (like Paint) and do whatever you want. This has always been the default behavior of the Print Screen key (PrtSc).

KB5025310 is changing the default behavior for everyone. After you install this update or a newer update, your Print Screen key will open the new snipping tool. For those who don’t know, Windows 11’s new Snipping Tool replaces the older Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch apps and combines the best features.

This means Windows 11 will not save your screenshot to the clipboard. Instead, it opens the snipping tool so you can change the screenshot and save it later. Thankfully, it's possible to revert to the original behavior.

To restore the classic Print Screen key, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and change the settings to how you want it.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft hasn’t changed the other methods or keyboard shortcuts for taking screenshots in Windows 11. This new behavior may be more user-friendly for those new to the Windows operating system.

Currently, Windows doesn't tell you what happens when you press the print key. Unless you have an app like ShareX installed, there is no warning or indication that it captures screenshots. This can be confusing for new users, so Microsoft uses PrtSc by default for its applications.

Additional improvements in KB5025310 for Windows 11

In KB5025310, Microsoft is updating the search bar in Windows Settings to improve performance. You'll notice that the search bar in Settings is now noticeably faster and can show suggestions more quickly as you type.

Microsoft has restricted tabs in Alt Tab and Snap Assist to minimize performance issues. A limit of 20 latest tabs has been introduced and users can change it from Settings > Multitasking.

There are several bug fixes. For example, Microsoft fixed an issue where the touch keyboard, emoji, or voice input panels wouldn't launch. Fixed another bug where the button in the Pinyin IME'IME'stings popup didn't work.

The company is aware of at least one issue in Windows 11 updates. The issue causes the taskbar search bar to display a daily rotating search highlight instead of a Bing button.
