Windows 10 KB5023696 released – heres whats new and how to download it

Windows 10 KB5023696 is now available on PCs in the production channel. This release is part of the March 2023 Patch Tuesday cycle and does not feature a large number of bug fixes or improvements. Microsoft has also released a download link for the Windows 10 KB5023696 offline installer.

KB5023696 is a Patch Tuesday release and it is not supposed to contain breaking tweaks. However, that doesn't necessarily mean there's a lack of exciting changes in Windows 10 updates. There are a lot of improvements in the update, including Windows Spotlight tweaks.

This is because Microsoft has included all bug fixes from the February 2023 update in the March 2023 patch for Windows 10. So what's new in the latest Patch Tuesday version of the operating system? According to the release notes, Windows Spotlight functionality has been improved in the latest update.

For those who don’t know, Windows Spotlight is a feature that makes your Windows 10 lock screen look its best. It brings the most beautiful Bing wallpapers, themes and background images to your lock screen. These backgrounds are automatically downloaded and displayed on your screen before you log in.

These Spotlight backgrounds also include pop-ups or information links. Microsoft says that with today's patch, it's improving the experience by opening information links faster. This change appears to be related to Microsoft Edge and the lock screen web service and does not affect any other functionality of the operating system.

You can install the update on any Windows 10 20H2 or later machine. If you are using version 22H2, you will get build 19045.2728. Likewise, if you're still on Windows 10 21H2, you'll get Build 19044.2728. Version 20H2 gets Build 19042.2728 today, but it's only available for enterprises.

(For those on Windows 11, please remember there is an update for your PC as well. However, it is a different patch with several new features. Version 22H2 is being built and the original version 21H2 is being built).

On Windows 10, when you check for updates today, you will see the following update:

March 2023 for Windows 10 version 22H2 for x64-based systems Cumulative Update (KB5023696)

or

March 2023 Cumulative Update (KB5023696) for Windows 10 version 21H2 on x64-based systems

The company has also addressed the issue of the United Mexican States changing daylight saving time to 2023. Additionally, it resolves deadlock issues affecting COM applications. A deadlock is a resource conflict between two or more threads.

The update includes several other important bug fixes, such as:

  • Prevent non-error messages from being logged in cbs.log
  • Improvements for Microsoft OneDrive folders Remove-Item cmdlet
  • Ensure that file names have correct letter case (uppercase or lowercase) in AppV
  • Remove conflicting policies for Microsoft Edge when using MDMWinsOverGPFlag in Intune
  • Enable bulk provisioning of Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) using provisioning packages
  • Correctly report the enforcement status of Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) user-mode policies in MSInfo.exe
  • Prevent LSASS from stopping responding after running Sysprep on a domain-joined computer.

Finally, Microsoft fixed an issue affecting virtual machines (VMs). When you add new disks to a storage pool in a thin provisioning scenario, they stop responding.

After installing the update, Microsoft has confirmed a bug that may prevent some devices from using Microsoft Edge. This issue affects devices that create Windows installations from custom offline media or custom ISO images. This occurs when you add this update to an image without first installing an SSU released on or after March 29, 2021.

Note that this issue does not affect devices that get updates directly from Windows Update. This includes devices using Windows Update for Business. Any device connected to Windows Update should always get the latest SSU and LCU without any additional steps.
