The Microsoft Store has been available to Windows users for a while, but it has lagged behind Apple and Google. With Windows 11, Microsoft is boosting its App Store efforts by bringing apps made in any framework to the Store with a new interface that provides a quick and easy way to browse, install, and update apps.
If you prefer the web interface to the Microsoft Store for some reason, there's a new Microsoft website that lets you download apps directly from your web browser. Microsoft has been developing a new web-based app store for Windows 11, and it looks like a stable version of the site quietly went live earlier this month.
The web-based version of the Microsoft Store can be found here and provides a better experience than the classic web store. Unlike the classic web store, which was nested within Microsoft.com, this new web store has been moved to apps.microsoft.com — the same store that also allows you to browse and install extensions for Chromium Edge.
Microsoft has not officially announced the design revamp, and the classic website is still accessible.
The store is called Windows Apps and has the same goal as native Store apps—helping you explore content while away from your primary device. It's also useful if you prefer to discover links through search engines or platforms.
As you can see in the screenshot above, Store web new design is closer to Windows 11 and seems to follow Fluent Design principles. It uses rounded corners, minimalist icons, and more. However, it does not support dark mode, but this may be added in a future version.
Unlike the classic web store, the new Microsoft Store does not allow you to view information such as an app's last update date or release date, but you can still view app descriptions, screenshot previews, and reviews and ratings.
You can also click the "Install" button to download the app through a new pop-up window, which makes the installation process without even opening the app store.
Quite interestingly, the portal also provides access to traditional desktop applications, including unpackaged ones.
Although the beta/preview version is no longer available in the store, it is still in the early stages of development and we expect more improvements in the coming months.
