Windows 11 bug causes color rendering issues on HDR monitors

icrosoft has confirmed a new issue affecting devices running Windows 11 version 21H2, where apps that use the Win32 API to render color on some high dynamic range (HDR) displays may not work as expected.

The color range of HDR monitors is significantly increased because they support a wider color gamut, resulting in more vivid colors than standard dynamic range (SDR), and due to the added support for more hues, color more accurate. Windows 11 bug causes color rendering issues on HDR monitors

However, customers may experience color rendering issues due to this newly confirmed Windows 11 bug.

"After installing Windows 11, some image editing programs may not render colors correctly on some HDR displays," Microsoft explains on the Windows Health Dashboard.

"This is often observed in white, which may appear as bright yellow or other colors. This problem occurs when certain color rendering Win32 APIs return unexpected information or errors under certain conditions."

Microsoft added that not all profile management programs are affected by this known issue.

Additionally, Windows 11 color profile options on the settings page (such as the Microsoft Color Control Panel) should work properly on affected systems.

Fix will be available in late January

Redmond is currently working on a fix and expects it to be released in late January.
