Microsoft today released a new Windows 11 Dev Channel build 22579, and like all recent Dev Channel releases, this one includes new features and changes. As usual, there are many bug fixes.

What's new in Build 22579

Exclude USB removable drives from encryption

We A new policy is being introduced to allow IT administrators to exclude USB removable drives from BitLocker encryption. This will solve the problem of automatic or accidental encryption of built-in storage in specialized devices such as cameras, audio recorders, conferencing systems, medical equipment, etc. When this policy is enabled, you will not be able to encrypt storage on the exclusion list and if you connect such storage to the device when "Deny write access to removable drives not protected by BitLocker" You are not prompted that the encryption policy is enabled. Until now, this policy could only be configured via an MDM custom OMA-URI.

Here are the steps IT administrators can take to exclude storage from encryption:

Step 1: Collect the hardware IDs of the devices you want to exclude. You can obtain the hardware ID of your device by following the steps listed in this documentation page.

Step 2: Configure the BitLocker exclusion list policy in Intune:

Log in to the Endpoint Manager portal.

Go to Device > Configuration Files.

Click "Create Profile".

Select the platform "Windows 10 and later" and profile type: "Template", then select the template name: "Custom".

Create a profile containing these dates in the Endpoint Manager portal to set your BitLocker exclusion list policy.
On the Basics tab, give your policy a name and add any description.

Add a name and description for your policy on the Basics tab of the profile you just created.
On the Configuration Settings tab click Add and:

Enter your Name and setup instructions.

Oma-URI: ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/BitLocker/ RemovableDrivesExcludedFromEncryption

Data type: String

Value: Enter the hardware ID you copied in the previous step. You can separate each entry with a comma.

Click Save, then click Next.

On the Assignment tab, select the group to which you want this policy to apply.

On the Assignments tab of the profile you just created, select the groups to which you want the policy to apply.
Click Next, Next, and then click Create on the Review create tab .

To ensure users can still quickly access the console after uninstalling Windows Terminal, we are updating the WIN X menu to point to Windows PowerShell. If you have Windows Terminal installed and want to open Windows PowerShell in Windows Terminal, we recommend that you go to Settings > Privacy & Security > For Developers and set Windows Terminal as your default Terminal application. The magnifying glass and on-screen keyboard now have new Fluent style icons.

[Start Menu]
You can now name your application folders in Start. To name a folder, simply create a folder (the default name is "Folder"), open it, click "Edit Name" and enter your folder name. Alternatively, open the folder with keyboard focus, then select the text box and start typing.

We’ve added pinned site suggestions to the Getting Started app so you can easily pin sites to task bar. To find this new feature, launch the Get Started app and navigate to the Apps & Sites We Think You'll Like page. Click on any site suggested on the page to pin it to your taskbar so you can access the sites you care about with one click.

Resolved an issue that caused game services to not work in the previous version, causing problems launching and installing some games.

Fixed some high-hit explorer.exe crashes affecting recent flights during general use of Windows.

Fixed a bug for Windows Insiders trying to upgrade directly from Windows 10 to the latest Windows 11 Dev Channel build.

【Tablet Optimized Taskbar】
NOTE: These fixes will only appear if the tablet optimized taskbar is enabled on your device. The taskbar has started rolling out to Windows Insiders, but is not yet available to everyone.

No more swiping twice from the tablet-optimized taskbar to reveal Start or Quick Settings—these will be revealed by continuing to swipe up once the taskbar is fully expanded.

Fixed an issue where using a swipe gesture to invoke the Start menu could display on the wrong screen if an external monitor was connected.

Notifications will no longer overlap the tablet-optimized taskbar.

Fixed an issue where the desktop area might not be fully rendered if you invoked task view.

Mid-clicking the app icon to launch a new instance of the app should now work again.

Fixed an issue where Start's folder still displayed animation even if you disabled the animation effect.

[Live Subtitles]

Live subtitles will now appear on your desktop.

If the live subtitles window is forced to float (such as when using a full-screen application), the "Screen Float" window position will now correctly appear as a selection in the settings popup.

The maximum height of the live subtitles window is now capped at 40% of the monitor height.

Live subtitles will no longer crash when shrinking the maximum height live subtitles window.

Switching mono audio will no longer crash live subtitles.

The known issues in Build 22579 are:

[Tablet-optimized taskbar]

The Clock app has not yet updated the Windows focus state when configuring a focus session within the app. This will be addressed in a future app update.

[Narration]

In the latest version, natural sounds occasionally break. Restart Narrator to resolve the issue.

[Live Subtitles]

Some full-screen apps (such as video players) prevent live subtitles from displaying.

Certain applications located near the top of the screen and closed before running live captions will relaunch behind the live caption window located at the top. Use the system menu (ALT Spacebar) while the application has focus to move the application's window further down.

When live subtitles are at the top, the very top of a maximized application (e.g., title bar window management buttons) cannot be reached by touch.

[Task Manager]

When Task Manager is configured for dark mode, some tooltips do not accurately display preferred visual settings.

Dev channel releases are now called the "NI_RELEASE" or Nickel branch in preparation for major feature updates to Windows 11 later this year.
