iPad Air 5 officially announced with M1 CPU, 5G, and Center Stage camera

Apple today released the fifth generation iPad Air. Like the new iPhone SE, the iPad Air 5 comes with the same chassis and display as the previous model. Key changes to the iPad Air 5 include the M1 chip, 5G support, and a front-facing camera with a wide-angle lens and center stage.

The updated iPad Air offers a huge performance boost compared to previous models with the A14 CPU. According to Apple, the M1 chip is 60 percent faster on the CPU and 100 percent faster on GPU-related tasks. iPad Air 5 also has a twice-fast USB-C port with transfer speeds of 10 Gbps.

Another quality-of-life improvement for the iPad Air 5 is the new front-facing camera. The latest mid-range iPad now sports the same wide 12-megapixel front-facing camera that takes center stage. It automatically pans and smoothly changes the field of view to keep everyone in the frame.

Finally, the last upgrade to the iPad Air 5 is support for 5G. Apple claims the tablet can reach speeds of up to 3.5Gbps under ideal conditions.

iPad Air 5 will be available for pre-order in 29 countries on March 11, 2022, starting at $599 (Wi-Fi only) and $749 (Wi-Fi -FI cellular network). Unlike the iPad Pro, you can only choose between two storage options: 64 GB or 256 GB. Sales begin March 18, 2022.
