iPhone 14 Pro rumored again with upgraded 48-megapixel camera

The iPhone 14 Pro models will have a 48-megapixel camera. Specifically, this refers to the rear wide-angle camera, which is currently 12 megapixels on iPhone 13 Pro models.

Multiple sources have mentioned adding a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera to the iPhone 14 Pro models, including analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who expects the upgraded camera to support 8K video Recording.

Simply increasing the megapixel count of a smartphone camera while maintaining the same image sensor size results in smaller pixels, allowing less light to be captured, resulting in lower-quality low-light photos. As a solution, Kuo has previously said that iPhone 14 Pro models will support both 48-megapixel and 12-megapixel outputs, likely through a process called pixel binning.

Pixel binning, already used on some Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, combines data from multiple smaller pixels on a camera's image sensor into a single "superpixel" to improve low-light sensitivity. Pixel binning will allow iPhone 14 Pro models to capture high-resolution 48-megapixel photos in bright conditions and 12-megapixel photos in low-light conditions that are still higher quality.

Given the large file size of 48-megapixel photos, iPhone 14 Pro models may shoot 12-megapixel photos by default, but Apple's implementation remains to be seen.
