Apple today released a new support document indicating that iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 allow restoring an Apple Watch using a nearby iPhone.

iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 let you restore your Apple Watch using your iPhone
The support document states that if an Apple Watch running watchOS 8.5 or later displays an animation of the Apple Watch and iPhone being in close proximity, customers can follow these steps to initiate the recovery process:

1. Make sure there is an iPhone nearby. iPhone requires iOS 15.4 or later, needs to be connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, and needs to be unlocked.
2. Place Apple Watch on the charger.
3. Double-click the side button on your Apple Watch (the button below the round Digital Crown).
4. Follow the steps shown on your iPhone.

If these steps don't work, Apple recommends customers check their Wi-Fi connection. Specifically, Apple says to try to use 2.4GHz networks instead of 5GHz, and avoid using 802.1X or forced Wi-Fi networks, such as those in hotel rooms.

In an internal memo to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers, Apple said this feature allows customers and technicians to restore watchOS on certain Apple Watch models without having to mail the device to an Apple repair center. The memo does not specify which Apple Watch models support the feature.

Customers may see a red exclamation mark on their Apple Watch, Apple's support document states. If this happens, Apple says to double-click the side button and then follow the steps above. If the Apple Watch continues to display a red exclamation mark, customers are advised to contact Apple Support to set up a mail-in repair.
