Microsoft is making changes to the OneDrive Files On-Demand experience on macOS

Back in 2018, Microsoft released a preview version of OneDrive Files On-Demand for macOS. The feature enables users to view their entire cloud storage on their machine, allowing them to select what they want to store and sync locally. Since then, the feature has reached general availability as new features have been added to the experience. Now, Microsoft has announced more changes coming to version 22.033 of the OneDrive sync client app.

The company is removing the cloud with the down arrow icon. This is because this icon confuses users whether it means the content is available offline or if they need an internet connection to download the content locally. This also means that the "Always stay on this device" command will continue to display a checkmark icon next to locally accessible content as before. Likewise, some apps like Spotlight and Time Machine can now index local files in OneDrive without requiring additional configuration from the user. It's important to note that the above changes only apply to people who don't sync their content to an external drive.

Files with an empty check mark can be brought online only when the operating system needs to save disk space.

The Redmond tech giant also noted that it will work with Apple to see how the File Provider platform can be changed to better work with external drives and OneDrive in future versions of macOS.

Finally, Microsoft is adding new options to the OneDrive preferences window to make it easier to sync all your OneDrive content locally. The first option is "Download all OneDrive files now" which is self-explanatory. The second is "Download files as they are used", which means that all files will only be online until you open them for the first time, after which they will be available locally as well. Understandably, files marked "Always keep on this device" are not affected by this option.

If you want to get on top of all these changes as soon as possible, Microsoft has recommended joining the OneDrive Insiders program. However, if you want these features to be generally available, you'll have to wait for OneDrive sync version 22.033 on macOS.
