Windows 11 legacy apps are set to receive Mica title bars as Microsoft prepares the operating system for more dark mode improvements. Similar to Fluent Design's Acrylic, Mica is an opaque and dynamic material that can be applied to applications to paint a background or title bar using a desktop theme. Mica and acrylic should coexist. Microsoft Edge is a great example of how to use both Windows 11’s mica effects and Fluent Design’s acrylic. Apps like Settings and Microsoft To Do already have mica effects on their title bars and even backgrounds. Microsoft is now extending this to legacy tools/applications such as Run or Winver (commands used to check system build and version revision numbers). In Windows 11 Build 22557, Mica has just been introduced in the title bar of almost every legacy dialog box or app. The mica effect is not a bad thing, it is considered faster than other Fluent Design materials such as acrylic. For some reason, the current implementation of Mica on the old dialog doesn't really obscure what's behind the app, and it looks more subtle than Mica on UWP apps. Notably, this is a completely different UI than the one Microsoft teased in a YouTube video posted last month. For those who don't know, Microsoft recently released a screenshot of the new Windows Run with a transparent Aero/Acrylic title bar. This unreleased title bar change can be seen above. As you can see in the screenshot above, the updated title bar design for prompts in YouTube streams is more transparent and engaging, with a glass effect. However, the new title bar included in the latest preview update is different, with a subtle touch of Microsoft's Mica design that's less interesting. Microsoft is exploring multiple design options for title bars Microsoft is believed to be developing a new "tab" version of the mica material with a glass-like effect and blurry wallpaper, according to reports. Likewise, we also found a reference to an experimental flag called "MicaBackdropInApplicationFrameHostTitlebar" in the preview build, which seems to indicate that Microsoft may be willing to embrace the mica effect. At this point, we don't really know if Microsoft has finalized Mica for traditional title bars instead of Acrylic or some other material. The general idea is to give legacy areas a modern feel and enable dark mode for more apps, including Windows Runtime.
