Windows 10 KB5013942 crashes Event Viewer and causes other issues

Some users are experiencing serious issues after the Windows 10 May 2022 Update was released. While Windows 11 users are experiencing app crashes after installing KB5013943, another important update this month, KB5013942, appears to be causing issues in Windows 10.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released the May 2022 cumulative updates for Windows 11 and Windows 10. Like previous versions, cumulative updates are mandatory downloads designed to patch issues and security issues caused by previous updates.

This month’s update for Windows 10 fixes a number of issues, including a bug that delayed system startup by up to 40 minutes instead of seconds. There are now some reports that the May 2022 Update itself cannot be installed on Windows 10. Installation issues aren't a major issue, but it looks like the patch broke some people's apps as well.

After installing KB5013942, users cannot launch Event Viewer. For those who don't know, Windows Event Viewer is a tool for administrators to monitor application logs and system messages, including errors, alerts, and warnings.

"There were some issues installing the update, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search online or contact support for information, this may help Help: (0x80073701)," one of the affected users described their experience while installing the update.

"Besides Event Viewer no longer opening, it looks like this patch removed files related to .NET 5 (or made them unusable). For me, my Fijitsu scanner software ScanSnap Error now, mscoree.dll is missing,” Another user highlighted the issue using Event Viewer and app crashing on Windows 10.

Comments on Windows 10 May 2022 Update issues are also available on the Feedback Hub, with one user saying "This update apparently causes incompatibility with drivers on my system as I keep getting this error after installing it" Machine check exception. After starting when all background services are started. Everything was fine before this update."

There have been various posts in our own comments sections and social media sites indicating that event viewer and application crashes are a growing problem.
