Microsoft is currently testing a new feature in its Windows 11 operating system that will alert users to the device if system requirements are not met.

Windows 11 will soon alert you if your PC doesn't meet the requirements

Microsoft made the cut when it released the Windows 11 operating system in late 2021. Operating system requirements are different and much stricter than previous versions of Windows. Previously, Microsoft tried to keep system requirements consistent between Windows versions so that devices could be upgraded to newer versions of the operating system.

This decade-long practice changed with the release of Windows 11. The most impactful changes limit the supported processors and require TPM support. PCs that don't meet one of the minimum requirements set by Microsoft will receive the message "This PC does not currently meet all system requirements for Windows 11" in Windows Update.

Microsoft introduced the option to bypass the system requirements check during installation, but apparently it doesn't recommend it. In fact, it stresses that it cannot guarantee that incompatible systems will receive future updates, including security updates.

Tools such as MediaCreationTool.bat, Ventoy or Rufus all come with options to bypass system requirement checks during installation or upgrade.

Microsoft did not disclose the number of devices running older versions of Windows that are incompatible with Windows 11. These will likely run Windows 10 by 2025, but Microsoft plans to end support for that version of Windows that year. What happens to these devices next?

Until now, devices running Windows 11 were treated the same regardless of whether they met the system requirements.

Twitter user Albacore discovered that Microsoft is adding a new reminder in the Settings app if the device does not meet the system requirements; this small reminder on the system page will not affect the functionality of the device. The information itself is redundant for several reasons. Administrators who upgrade incompatible devices know that the devices are incompatible.

On the other hand, users may not know, but there is nothing they can do about it unless the requirements for PC support are not met (such as a disabled TPM module).

Microsoft has not clarified its statement that incompatible Windows 11 devices may not receive future updates. It's possible that this statement is precautionary only, offering zero guarantee, but it's also possible that future updates (e.g., the next feature update) may not install on incompatible devices.
