Do you like the sound of a mechanical keyboard but don’t necessarily want to use one? Or maybe you prefer to use one but can't when traveling with your MacBook? A nifty new app called Klack brings satisfying, realistic mechanical keyboard sounds to your Mac.
My good friend and former 9to5Mac colleague Parker Ortolani discovered Klack and shared how much fun he was having with it. So I decided to buy it myself to try out on my MacBook Pro.
Developed by Henrik Ruscon, the app recently launched at the end of March for a one-time price of $3.99.
Klack is a native Mac app written entirely in Swift that focuses on providing mechanical keyboard sounds. Here are the key features:
Klack is easy to get started. Besides installing and launching the app, the only other step is to add it to the accessibility permissions list. This allows mechanical sounds to match your typing with instant audio feedback (for privacy reasons, Klack does not collect any user data).
You need to click the icon in accessibility settings > select Klack from the Applications folder in Finder. After that, you can run normally.
The default mechanical switch sound effect is Everglide Crystal Purple, providing a classic and complete mechanical key sound effect.
You can also choose between Everglide Oreo and NovelKeys Cream. The Oreo offers a slightly more subtle but higher-pitched sound, while the Cream feels to my ears the subtlest of the three.
In my short time with the Klack, I've really liked all three, but now I'm going with the Crystal Purple because it sounds better.
Klack features convenient menu bar access that can be turned off to adjust the volume between soft, balanced, and loud without having to change your Mac's system volume, change switches, and go into settings.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut command control K to turn Klack off and on.
As for the app’s promise of high-fidelity sound, instant type feedback, “blazing-fast” speeds, etc. – I found it Achieved.
I've tested the Klack with my MacBook Pro's built-in speakers and AirPods Pro. And with the built-in keyboard and Apple's Bluetooth Magic Keyboard, Klack delivers instant, high-quality sound in all combinations.
Klack's attention to detail is immediately apparent with thoughtful additions like up and down key press sounds, spatial audio when using supported speaker/headphone sources, and unique sound effects when changing switches or closing/opening apps.
I'm really glad I spent the $4 to try out Klack, it's well worth it for anyone interested in an enhanced tactile and audio experience without the need/want of a mechanical keyboard . If you haven't used a mechanical keyboard before, it's hard to put into words how pleasant this effect is. But one way to think about it is that the Mac is the equivalent of haptic feedback on the iPhone.
In less than two weeks since launch, Klack has received 17 reviews, with an average rating of 4.9/5.
My only constructive feedback is that if there was a free trial, even for a day, I think more people would experience the fun of it and end up buying the app. Regardless, I definitely recommend the Klack since the one-time price is $3.99 (much less than an actual mechanical keyboard).
