Microsoft adds new 'Mica Alt' Windows 11 UX stuff

The Windows 11 user interface (UI) and the visual effects in its various applications are powered by three materials: Acrylic, Mica, and Smoke. Microsoft recently added another material called "Mica Alt," which was discovered by Twitter user and leaker FireCube.

As FireCube points out, the new Mica Alt material is generally used for tabbed instances and Microsoft's guidance document confirms this. Microsoft talks about this in the app layering section of its tutorial:

App layering with Mica Alt

Mica Alt is a replacement for Mica, Can be used as a base layer in an application hierarchy, with the same functionality such as inactive and active states and subtle personalization. We encourage you to use Mica Alt as the base layer of your application when you need contrast between title bar elements and the command areas of your application (e.g. navigation, menus).

A common scenario for using Mica Alt is when you create an application with a tabbed title bar.

In terms of requirements, Microsoft says the new Mica Alt material can be used with "apps using Windows App SDK 1.1 or later."
