Microsoft accidentally releases Windows 11 for unsupported PCs

With the release of Windows 11 22H2 just around the corner, the tech giant continues to push the hardware requirements it announced last year, seemingly confirming that it still doesn't plan to green-pass devices with older processors or without TPM 2.0.

Members of the Windows Insider program got a surprise earlier today, as Microsoft (unexpectedly) released the next feature update to everyone in Release Preview. For those who don’t know, you can’t use Windows 11 on an unsupported PC, even if you’re in the Insider Program.

On Tuesday, Microsoft released Windows 11 22H2 in the Release Preview channel, confirming that Windows' next major update is now one step closer to a wider public release in the fall. The update includes Mica for Win32 applications, drag and drop, a better start menu, a new task manager, and more.

But soon after the feature update was released to the Preview channel, some users started receiving the update on their unsupported PCs. As you can see in the screenshot below, notifications for "Build 22H2" appear on unsupported Windows 10 and Windows 11 machines registered in the Release Preview channel.

Users on Reddit revealed that their unsupported devices were considered RTM builds of Windows 11 22H2, but Microsoft seemed to have accidentally rolled out the update when it actually wasn’t Change requirements.

According to reports, the update for unsupported hardware appears to have now been removed from servers, and it is not automatically downloaded to any devices set up as part of the Windows Insider program.

First of all, Windows 10 will not start downloading feature updates right away, even if you are a member of the Release Preview channel with an unsupported PC. Version 22H2 is completely optional and users must pass one or more prompts to begin the installation process.

Microsoft says rollout was a mistake

It's rare for Microsoft to accidentally roll out updates to devices, and unfortunately, that doesn't mean more PCs now support Windows 11.

Microsoft officials tried to clarify this in a statement, saying there were no plans to change the requirements.

"This is a bug and the correct team is investigating it," Microsoft noted. "The requirements have not changed."

It’s also worth noting that most Windows devices are not part of the Insider Program, and today’s unexpected release of Windows 11 22h2 is not an issue.
