Microsoft today released a new Insider build for Windows 11, and with it comes two new apps that will become the default apps for Windows 11 on many PCs. The two apps in question are Microsoft Family and Clipchamp.

Microsoft adds more default apps to Windows 11

Windows default applications are designed to provide functionality out of the box. Common applications such as Notepad for plain text editing, Windows Media Player for media playback, and Screenshots and Sketch for screen captures add support for common tasks to Windows. Windows users can download and install third-party apps, which often have improved functionality and better support.

While some default apps provide support for common activities and tasks on your Windows PC immediately after installation, other apps may be included for different purposes.

Clipchamp

Clipchamp is one of two new apps Microsoft has integrated into the latest Windows 11 Insider build. Microsoft acquired the service last year and has now integrated it into the operating system.

Clipchamp is a subscription-based video editing service. The app was released on the Microsoft Store in late 2020, and Windows users can download and install it immediately. A Microsoft account is required to use the app, and the basic version is limited in several ways. All Clipchamp plans support unlimited video production, use of local resources, use of webcam and screen recording capabilities, and access to all essential editing tools.

The main limitation of the free plan is that exporting is limited to 480p resolution. Users who want better quality output can sign up for the Creator or Business plans. Creator supports 720p, commercial 1080p export. The Creator plan is $9 per month and the Business plan is $19 per month. Basic and creator outputs are further watermarked. Clipchamp supports additional features, such as the ability to use Azure-powered text-to-speech or integrate with online storage services in the paid version.

Microsoft Family

Unlike Clipchamp, which is added to Home and Pro editions, Microsoft Family is only installed on Home editions by default. Pro users can download the app to their system by going to Settings > Accounts > Home.

Microsoft Family brings parental controls and family management features to the operating system. Family managers can use it to set parental controls, filter "inappropriate apps and games," and set up kid-friendly browsing in Edge. The app helps families manage and monitor their children's activities on Windows, Xbox and Android devices.
