How to create an array without key in php

Apr 20, 2023 am 10:12 AM

In PHP development, array is a very important data type. It is an ordered list that stores values (elements) in a single variable. In PHP, there are two types of arrays: numeric arrays and associative arrays. Numeric arrays are arrays that are sorted using index keys of consecutive numbers, whereas associative arrays use named keys to represent elements. In both types of arrays, key-value pairs are required as a way of storing elements, but sometimes, we need an array type that does not require key-value pairs. This is "array without key" in PHP.

Different from ordinary arrays, arrays without keys use consecutive numeric indices as identifiers of array elements. This means that in this type of array, the elements do not need keys or values, but only need to have consecutive numeric indexes in the array. Generally, an array without a key is called an index array or a numeric array.

In PHP, we can use consecutive numeric indexes to create arrays without keys. Here is a simple example:

$arr = array('apple', 'banana', 'orange');
Copy after login

In this example, an array without key is created from an array containing three string values. We did not specify the keys of the array elements, so PHP uses the default numeric index (that is, consecutive numbers starting from 0) to identify the array elements. Therefore, $arr[0] is equal to 'apple', $arr[1] is equal to 'banana', and $arr[2] is equal to 'orange'.

In an array without a key, we can add and access elements in a variety of ways just like a normal array. For example, we can use the array_push() function to add new elements at the end:

$arr = array();
array_push($arr, 'apple', 'banana', 'orange');
Copy after login

We can also use the "[]" operator to add elements:

$arr[] = 'apple';
$arr[] = 'banana';
$arr[] = 'orange';
Copy after login

In an array without a key, We can use the count() function to get the length of the array, like this:

$count = count($arr);
Copy after login

We can use a for loop to iterate over the elements in the array:

for ($i = 0; $i < count($arr); $i++) {
    echo $arr[$i] . ' ';
}
// output: apple banana orange
Copy after login

Or we can use a foreach loop to Traverse the elements in the array:

foreach ($arr as $value) {
    echo $value . ' ';
}
// output: apple banana orange
Copy after login

Arrays without keys are very suitable for storing some simple, quantity-related information. They can be used to calculate the sum, average, maximum and minimum values of elements in an array, etc. Apart from that, they can also be used to do some simple things in PHP, like printing out some data or used in a simple loop counter.

In short, arrays without keys are a development tool in PHP. This array type does not require key-value pairs, just consecutive numeric indices as identifiers for elements. It can be used to store some simple quantity-related information.
