Microsoft is slowly updating existing apps to bring a new look to Windows 11. In addition to Paint, Notepad, Snipping Tool and other apps, Microsoft is also developing a new email client under the Outlook brand. The project, codenamed "Project Monarch," aims to build a cross-platform email experience for everyone.

This new Outlook can be marketed as a reboot of the Mail and Calendar apps. There are many ways to launch Outlook on Windows, which is why Microsoft thought it was time to develop a truly universal email client.

Currently, Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions come pre-installed with an app called Mail & Calendar. The Mail & Calendar app is based on the company's Fluent Design and UWP principles, with a design reminiscent of the Windows 10 user interface.

The Mail and Calendar apps have their own limitations, and many users prefer the original Outlook desktop app or even the Mail UWP web app. With the new Outlook app, Microsoft is looking to consolidate the Outlook apps into a unified application that can manage your mail across all supported desktop platforms.

First look at the new Outlook app for Windows

Microsoft plans to launch the first public preview of the One Outlook app in late March or April, followed by its release in the summer Expand to other Insider channels. Currently, general availability is planned for fall 2022, and we expect the app to come pre-installed with Windows 11 22H2.

One Outlook will be available for Windows, macOS, and the web, according to references on Microsoft's website. Initially, it will only be available on Windows 11 or Windows 10, but won't replace the Mail and Calendar apps anytime soon. Both apps will remain available side-by-side on Windows 11, rather than forcing users to migrate to the new Outlook.

At some point in the future, we expect the new Outlook to replace all Outlook apps on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It's unclear when this will happen.

#Thanks to another support document, we know that the interface of the new Outlook will be similar to Outlook on the web. As you can see in the screenshot above, the Outlook web-based app will have rounded corners, and the icons inside it will also have rounded edges to give it a more modern look.

Like other web applications, One Outlook will support Windows 11’s Start menu, taskbar, notifications, and other features.

According to media reports, Microsoft will confirm the rumored details sometime this spring, possibly around the Build 2022 developer conference.
