Discord announced today that it will launch a series of new AI experiences on a limited number of servers as a free public experiment. The company emphasized that AI has become an integral part of many Discord users and servers, saying that "more than 30 million people already use AI applications on Discord every month."
The biggest belongs to Midjourney, an AI that enables users to create images using text commands. Discord claims that its users have created over 1 billion unique images using AI applications on Discord servers.
The AI experience is already available on nearly 3 million servers. These range from AI helping to generate game assets, to writing novels with AI, to AI companions, AI companies, and AI-based learning communities. According to the company, 10% of new Discord users join because of AI.
Discord explains that users join Discord for AI because of its community-based approach. Users can use AI with friends on Discord, which is what differentiates it from Bing Chat, Google Bard, ChatGPT, and other AI-powered services and apps.
Discord is rolling out three AI experiences on select servers for a small subset of its users. There's Clyde, which many Discord users may have encountered on the site. This is a useful bot that responds to slash commands and sends direct messages to users when they make mistakes.
An updated version of Clyde powered by OpenAI technology will be available to select Discord users and servers next week.
Discord notes that the AI-powered Clyde "can now answer questions," and that users and groups may have "longer conversations" with Clyde. Just enter @Clyde into the server to get started.
Clyde can also run commands for users; it can create a thread for a group of friends to hang out, recommend playlists, access GIFs and emojis, and more.
AutoMod AI is Discord’s second artificial intelligence feature. Like Clyde AI, AutoMod AI is an AI-powered version of a tool already on Discord. AutoMod is a tuning tool that runs automatically. GitHub says it has blocked more than 45 million unwanted messages since launch.
AutoMod AI is designed to notify moderation on Discord when server rules are broken. The AI takes into account the "context of the conversation" and uses OpenAI technology.
Conversation summaries are the third and final AI experience. As the name suggests, it is an AI that aggregates messages into topics. Great for catching up after users have been gone for a while. The feature needs to be enabled in the server settings, and Discord plans to experiment with the feature in a variety of ways starting next week.
#Discord has revealed some additional AI features coming to the service. There's Avatar Remix, an open-source tool that "lets friends remix each other's avatars using the power of generative image models."
Discord developers are also considering adding a whiteboard with AI preview functionality to the service. They note that they are "exploring a shared visual space for collaboration with friends and colleagues, including an AI-powered text-to-image generator."
Last but not least, Discord is launching an AI incubator as part of its first ecosystem fund launched last year.
