When should I replace the iPhone battery?

  • TL;DR: When your battery's charge drops below 80% of its original capacity, you may want to consider replacing the battery. The same goes for if you see a warning about battery degradation or failure to charge.
    • Under the "Battery Health and Charging" section shown above, you should see a warning if your battery health has declined and whether it is causing issues such as unexpected shutdowns and/or an inability to maintain peak performance.
  • Apple says iPhone batteries are "designed to retain 80% of their original capacity over 500 full charge cycles when operating under normal conditions."

If you are in the United States, your replacement product is covered by a one-year warranty or AppleCare. However, if you're out of warranty, Apple charges a service fee of $69-$99 for an iPhone battery replacement.

When your iPhone battery drops below 80% of its original capacity, a feature called Performance Management may automatically apply. This helps prevent unexpected shutdowns.

However, performance throttling can be turned off. Look for the small "Disable" button at the end of the text below "Peak Performance Capability."

If you see a message saying that your battery's health is degraded or unknown, go to an Apple Store, contact Apple Support, or if you want a certified Apple battery replacement, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
