It’s been over 200 days since Apple launched its redesigned MacBook Pro line. Available in 14-inch and 16-inch display sizes, the new-look MacBook wows Apple fans and creative professionals with its powerful custom Apple silicon, mini-LED screen, and diverse connectivity options. But there are still some things the MacBook Pro can't do. Here are five features some Mac users are still waiting for.

使用 MacBook Pro 仍然无法做到的五件事

1. Support 120Hz 4K display

Five years after removing the HDMI port on MacBook Pro, Apple is bringing the commonly used multimedia interface to returned its top-tier laptops. Unfortunately, the returning HDMI port isn't that top-notch—it's an HDMI 2.0 port, not an HDMI 2.1 port.

HDMI 2.1 technology will allow the port to run 4K displays at a refresh rate of 120Hz. For now, the HDMI 2.0 port on the current MacBook Pro only supports 4K displays with refresh rates up to 60Hz.

Apple's decision not to support 4K at 120Hz is likely based on bandwidth limitations, but connecting a Thunderbolt/USB-C monitor will yield a similar maximum refresh rate. According to Apple, the M1 Pro MacBook Pro models support up to two external displays with resolutions up to 6K at 60Hz, while the M1 Max MacBook Pro models support up to three external displays with resolutions up to 6K and external displays with resolutions up to 4K resolution. is 60Hz.

2. Support for UHS-III SD cards

To appease photographers and videographers, Apple has reintroduced an SD card slot, which has not been available in MacBook Pro models since 2015 appeared. What it doesn't explicitly advertise is that the slot doesn't support UHS-III cards, which offer read and write speeds of up to 624 MB/s. (That’s not the only disappointment: The SD card slot on the new MacBook Pro supports UHS-II cards, but data transfer speeds only top out at 250MB/s, rather than the 312MB/s the standard is theoretically capable of. .)

There may not be many UHS-III cameras on the market yet, but future-proofing connectivity on laptops that cost over $2,000 is always a welcome measure.

3. Ethernet Port

The reason Apple didn’t add an Ethernet connection to its latest MacBook Pro is simple: the standard Ethernet port is actually thicker than the laptop’s chassis. So why should this even be considered a glaring omission?

Apple faced the same challenge with the slim design of its latest 24-inch iMac, which, unlike the MacBook Pro, has traditionally included an Ethernet port. Apple's solution is to place the Ethernet port in the power adapter. Apple says this "cool new innovation" allows users to make their desks less cluttered while still enjoying the benefits of Ethernet, which makes the lack of a similar port on the MacBook Pro power brick all the more surprising.

4. 5G network connectivity

Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Dell, and HP all offer laptops with 5G connectivity, but no Mac in Apple's laptop lineup currently supports the cellular standard. That's not the case with Apple's iPad range, with LTE versions of the iPad Pro and iPad mini readily available.

使用 MacBook Pro 仍然无法做到的五件事 Apple has developed "low-level Mac support" for cellular connectivity, and given that we know Apple is working on its own custom modem that could appear in iPhones as early as 2023, here's hoping it does Appearing in next year's MacBook Mid Pro.

5. Wi-Fi 6E support

Some people say that Wi-Fi 6E is too new and not worthy of Apple’s support. The counterargument is that the Google Pixel 6 and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra already meet that standard, and users typically upgrade their smartphones much more frequently than their laptops.

Wi-Fi 6E delivers the features and capabilities of Wi-Fi 6, including higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates, extending into the 6 GHz band. The additional spectrum provides more airspace beyond existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, increasing bandwidth and reducing interference to Wi-Fi 6E-enabled devices.

Since early 2021 (just months before the new MacBook Pro launched), six routers and mesh systems have included the latest Wi-Fi 6E band. More to come over time. All of these reasons are why Apple is expected to support the standard in its first mixed reality headset, expected later this year or next year. It's by no means out of the question that it could be used in the next MacBook Pro.
