In a new support document, Microsoft confirms that version 22H2 is built on top of Windows 10 version 2004 and that it will not bring any changes to the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP).

In other words, existing versions of Windows Hardware Lab Kit (Windows HLK) will continue to work on this new feature update. There will be no new Windows HLK version for version 22H2, partners can continue to use the existing version 2004 HLK for certification.

Similarly, Microsoft says existing drivers will continue to work properly after installing version 22H2. "Drivers that meet all applicable Windows 10 version 2004 requirements will be digitally signed," Microsoft noted.

Windows 10 22H2 details so far

A reference to Windows 10 22H2 was recently discovered in one of the cumulative updates (KB5015684). The update is now officially available to Windows Insiders and switches the operating system version from 21H2 to 22H2.

Microsoft is sticking to the same naming convention, so this update can launch as the "October 2022 Update" or the "November 2022 Update."

Version 22H2/Build 19046 will be enabled via the same "enablement package" format, meaning that the features launched with the update are already part of the optional functionality, but they are hidden from the public.

Windows 11, on the other hand, will get its first major feature called Sun Valley 2, or "version 22H2," which includes several new features and quality improvements. For example, this update adds support for taskbar drag and drop, Task Manager’s dark mode, and more.
