Microsoft revealed this week how it plans to deliver content to Windows devices outside of the regular feature update and cumulative update process.

微软将使用功能、在线和 Web 体验包来提供 Windows 功能

Microsoft's Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems will go forward receiving annual feature updates and monthly cumulative updates (excluding preview updates). Both can be used to deliver new functionality to user devices.

Company officials confirmed some time ago that there are other ways to push features to Windows devices. Last month, Microsoft announced that it would make some features available for public testing, including the long-awaited integration of Windows Subsystem for Android.

A new blog post by Amanda Langowski on the official Windows Insider blog sheds light on how Microsoft plans to deliver features to Windows devices that don’t ship with cumulative updates or annual feature updates.

We will also provide updates to features and experiences in builds from the development and test channels by releasing feature, web, and online service experience packs on top of these builds.

Langowski mentioned Dev and Beta channels, but the entire experience pack system is not limited to these channels.

  • Feature Experience Packs - These push new features and updates to Windows devices when they are updated. They have been used for some time.
  • Online Service Experience Package - Essentially smaller than a feature experience package, an online service experience package improves a specific experience. Microsoft named the "New Microsoft Account Settings Page" as an example of such an update.
  • Web Experience Pack - Microsoft has not provided a description of the Web Experience Pack. It can be used to improve web features such as PWAs, Windows widgets, or support for new technologies.
