python gil

1. Why is there GIL

The designers want to avoid complex competing risk issues (race conditions) similar to memory management

Because CPython uses a large number of C language libraries, but most of them C language libraries are not natively thread-safe (thread safety will reduce performance and increase complexity)

2. How GIL works

When multiple threads execute, each thread starts When executing, the GIL will be locked to prevent other threads from executing. Similarly, after each thread completes a period of execution, the GIL will be released to allow other threads to start using resources.

There is another one in CPython Mechanism, called check_interval, the CPython interpreter will poll and check the lock status of the thread GIL. Every once in a while, the Python interpreter will force the current thread to release the GIL so that other threads can have a chance to execute

for (;;) {
    if (--ticker < 0) {
        ticker = check_interval;

        /* Give another thread a chance */
        PyThread_release_lock(interpreter_lock);

        /* Other threads may run now */

        PyThread_acquire_lock(interpreter_lock, 1);
    }

    bytecode = *next_instr++;
    switch (bytecode) {
        /* execute the next instruction ... */
    }
}
Copy after login

3.Thread safety of python

With GIL, you still need to consider thread safety when programming

4.How to bypass GIL?

Bypass CPython and use other implementations such as JPython (Python interpreter implemented in Java)
Put the key performance code into other languages (usually C) to implement

5. When processing CPU-intensive tasks, why is multi-threading sometimes slower than single-threading?

GIL adopts a mechanism of running threads in turns. GIL needs to continuously switch between threads. If there are many threads or the running time is long, the performance loss caused by switching may exceed that of a single thread

6. Do you think GIL is a good design?

In fact, after Python 3, there is indeed a lot of discussion about the improvement or even cancellation of GIL. What is your opinion? Have you ever been troubled by GIL in your daily work?

GIL is still a good design. Although it loses performance, it plays a certain role in ensuring that resources will not conflict and prevent deadlocks

Can vs code run in Windows 8 Can vs code run in Windows 8 Apr 15, 2025 pm 07:24 PM

VS Code can run on Windows 8, but the experience may not be great. First make sure the system has been updated to the latest patch, then download the VS Code installation package that matches the system architecture and install it as prompted. After installation, be aware that some extensions may be incompatible with Windows 8 and need to look for alternative extensions or use newer Windows systems in a virtual machine. Install the necessary extensions to check whether they work properly. Although VS Code is feasible on Windows 8, it is recommended to upgrade to a newer Windows system for a better development experience and security.

Is the vscode extension malicious? Is the vscode extension malicious? Apr 15, 2025 pm 07:57 PM

VS Code extensions pose malicious risks, such as hiding malicious code, exploiting vulnerabilities, and masturbating as legitimate extensions. Methods to identify malicious extensions include: checking publishers, reading comments, checking code, and installing with caution. Security measures also include: security awareness, good habits, regular updates and antivirus software.

How to run programs in terminal vscode How to run programs in terminal vscode Apr 15, 2025 pm 06:42 PM

In VS Code, you can run the program in the terminal through the following steps: Prepare the code and open the integrated terminal to ensure that the code directory is consistent with the terminal working directory. Select the run command according to the programming language (such as Python's python your_file_name.py) to check whether it runs successfully and resolve errors. Use the debugger to improve debugging efficiency.

Can visual studio code be used in python Can visual studio code be used in python Apr 15, 2025 pm 08:18 PM

VS Code can be used to write Python and provides many features that make it an ideal tool for developing Python applications. It allows users to: install Python extensions to get functions such as code completion, syntax highlighting, and debugging. Use the debugger to track code step by step, find and fix errors. Integrate Git for version control. Use code formatting tools to maintain code consistency. Use the Linting tool to spot potential problems ahead of time.

Can vscode be used for mac Can vscode be used for mac Apr 15, 2025 pm 07:36 PM

VS Code is available on Mac. It has powerful extensions, Git integration, terminal and debugger, and also offers a wealth of setup options. However, for particularly large projects or highly professional development, VS Code may have performance or functional limitations.

Can vscode run ipynb Can vscode run ipynb Apr 15, 2025 pm 07:30 PM

The key to running Jupyter Notebook in VS Code is to ensure that the Python environment is properly configured, understand that the code execution order is consistent with the cell order, and be aware of large files or external libraries that may affect performance. The code completion and debugging functions provided by VS Code can greatly improve coding efficiency and reduce errors.
