At an April 5 event, Microsoft highlighted those who store their passwords in plain text. In fact, some people store passwords in Notepad and save them as .txt files, which is not a good security practice since passwords should be hashed. With Sun Valley 2, Microsoft plans to provide phishing protection at the operating system level.

New security features in Windows 11 use Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, which is integrated into the operating system and provides protection against malicious applications or browser extensions. In 22H2 or later, Microsoft Defender will provide protection against phishing using its AI-driven detection technology.

The new phishing feature is designed to protect users from phishing attacks by identifying when they enter their credentials in applications such as Notepad and malicious programs, and by displaying them in open applications or tabs. The pop-up window above the screen alerts the user.

So how does this work? In theory, Windows 11's smart screen saver works at the kernel level and is able to tell when you enter your password into any application. It can also detect passwords entered into forms on websites that attempt to copy the original website, such as Microsoft or Facebook.

This will ensure that only trusted applications run and block attacks on Windows 11 devices by default.

"We also look forward to bringing the power of the cloud to hardware with flexible, updatable Microsoft Pluton secure processors. We're excited about the ecosystem progress to date," Microsoft said at the event.

Starting with Sun Valley 2, new anti-phishing protection will be available out of the box for Windows 11 users, making Windows the first operating system in the world to offer phishing protection at the kernel level.

In the past, Microsoft has blocked 25.6 billion brute force authentication attacks and detected or blocked 35.7 billion phishing emails using Microsoft Defender for Office 365.

Microsoft Azure or Office users are constantly under attack, and Microsoft is leveraging its expertise in this area to improve phishing protection for Windows 11 to ensure users’ passwords are always safe.
