Clipchamp, the video editor included in Windows 11, is getting a long-overdue improvement after a lackluster initial release. Microsoft is bringing 1080p video export support to the Clipchamp free tier, meaning you no longer have to pay extra for what should be a relatively basic feature.
Clipchamp is a cloud-based video editor that Microsoft acquired last year before launching Windows 11. At launch, Windows 11 came with a shortcut for the Clipchamp PWA that had to be downloaded and installed, but Microsoft has recently started pre-installing the app with the operating system. That's when some users noticed that the pricing structure seemed to be a scam, considering the free tier only allowed users to export videos at a paltry 480p resolution. Even the first paid tier, at $9 a month, only gets you 720p in egress.
1080p video export is included all the way up to the free tier. All other benefits are the same for the paid tiers, which include unlimited cloud storage and audio inventory for the Creator tier ($9/month), Branding Suite for the Business tier ($19/month), and unlimited video and image inventory for Business Premium Edition ($39/month). Weirdly, Microsoft still doesn't allow users to export videos at a resolution higher than 1080p on any Clipchamp layer. If you're interested in 4K video, this still isn't ideal.
Still, this is a much needed change, considering an interesting change from Microsoft, which said it won't change Clipchamp's pricing structure. To be fair, the price is the same as before, but with 1080p video available to everyone, the value proposition has changed significantly. It remains to be seen whether new value will be added to higher tiers, or if Microsoft will simplify the pricing structure in the future.
