How to delete an item from an array in php

Apr 27, 2023 am 09:07 AM

PHP is a powerful programming language that provides many useful array functions, including adding, updating, and deleting elements in an array. In this article, we will discuss how to delete an item from an array using PHP.

Normally, we use the unset() function to delete elements in the array. This function requires one parameter, which is the key or index of the element to be deleted. Here is an example that demonstrates how to remove specific elements from an array:

$fruits = array("apple", "banana", "orange", "kiwi");
unset($fruits[1]); // 删除 "banana"
Copy after login

In the above example, we have created an array containing four fruits. Then use the unset() function to delete the element "banana" with index 1 in the array. Now, there are only three elements left in the $fruits array, namely "apple", "orange", and "kiwi".

If you want to delete elements in an associative array, you can use the following code:

$students = array(
    "john" => 20,
    "jane" => 22,
    "mary" => 18,
    "peter" => 19
);
unset($students["jane"]); // 删除 "jane" 这个元素
Copy after login

In the above example, we created an associative array in which each key name is associated with a corresponding to the age of the students. The "jane" element in the array was then deleted using the unset() function, since this was the key to the specific element to be deleted.

Although PHP provides other methods to delete array elements, using the unset() function is the simplest and most direct way. When using it, just pass in the key name or index of the element to be deleted.

If you want to delete multiple elements in an array, you can use a loop to loop through the array and delete each element one by one. Here is an example of using foreach() to loop through an associative array to delete multiple elements:

$students = array(
    "john" => 20,
    "jane" => 22,
    "mary" => 18,
    "peter" => 19
);
$to_remove = array("jane", "mary"); // 要删除的元素的数组
foreach($to_remove as $key) {
    unset($students[$key]);
}
Copy after login

In the above example, we have created an associative array containing four students. We also created a $to_remove array, which contains the keys of the elements to be removed, namely "jane" and "mary". Then use a foreach loop to iterate through the $to_remove array and remove each element one by one. Finally, there are only two elements left in the $students array: "john" and "peter".

In short, deleting an item from an array in PHP is simple and fast. You just need to use the unset() function and specify the key or index of the element you want to delete.
