Unlike the previous two years, WWDC 2022 will include an in-person event at Apple Park on June 6. While much smaller than events Apple offered before the COVID-19 pandemic, this marks the first time Apple has welcomed developers back to Apple Park for any form of in-person event.
With applications now open for this year’s WWDC in-person gathering, head below to learn everything you need to know.
When Apple first announced WWDC 2022 last month, its press release touted the event as having a "fully online format." This is technically correct, as Apple will offer all the same online experiences this year as it did in 2020 and 2022. This includes virtual meetings, lab keynotes and State of the Union presentations, digital lounges, and more.
However, further buried in the press release is the noteworthy news that WWDC 2022 will include an in-person component for Apple developers and students.
According to Apple, this will be a "special day for developers and students" at Apple Park. Attendees will gather to watch WWDC’s opening keynote address and State of the Union video. Developers can also "explore the new Developer Center" in Apple Park, which the company has yet to officially reveal to the public.
Apple says:
We are kicking off WWDC22 with a special all-day experience at Apple Park on June 6. Gather with others in the developer community, watch keynotes and Platforms State of the Union videos with Apple engineers and experts, explore the new Developer Center, and more. We can't wait to connect in person.
This celebration marks the start of an exciting week of classes, labs and lounges – all taking place online with more action than ever before.
Apple has officially opened entry to this small “Apple Park Special Event” on June 6 Apply. The company said the event is open to Apple Developer Program, Apple Developer Enterprise Program and 2022 Swift Student Challenge applicants.
Eligible developers and students can apply starting today through May 11 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple says the invitations will be "assigned through a random selection process" and are non-transferable. All applicants will receive notification of their status on May 12 at 6:00 PM PT.
You can apply to attend WWDC 2022 in person by visiting the Apple website here . The application process is just a matter of logging in with your Apple ID.
This is the first time Apple has hosted an in-person event of any kind since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Although the event is much smaller than previous WWDC events, the company is still taking some COVID-19 precautions. This includes proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than three days before the event.
For now, Apple says masks are currently optional and do not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination. These policies may change once June 6 arrives, and Apple says it will "detail the latest requirements for attendees in advance of the event."
Even though this is a scaled-down version of the WWDC live event compared to previous years, it's worth noting that Apple is inviting people back to Apple Park for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began. It sets the stage for more in-person events There's still a lot we don't know about this "special event," including details about where exactly it will take place at Apple. This will likely depend on how many developers and students Apple invites, but possibilities include the Apple Park Visitor Center, the Steve Jobs Theater and the center ring of the Apple Rainbow Stage.
