Samsung Display is developing new under-panel camera technology that Apple plans to use to hide Face ID under the display of next year’s model, tentatively called the “iPhone 15 Pro.”

传闻 iPhone 15 Pro 将配备三星的屏下面部识别系统
While this year's "iPhone 14 Pro" models are rumored to feature "punch-hole" and pill-shaped cutouts for the front-facing camera and Face ID components respectively, today's report claims Apple is planning to launch an iPhone 15 Pro model with just a hole for the front camera and Face ID hidden under the display.

The report claims that Samsung’s technology will effectively make the Face ID sensor appear invisible to the naked eye, in a manner similar to the hidden under-display camera on its Galaxy Z Fold3 smartphone. On the Fold3, the under-display camera has a lower pixel density than the rest of the display to allow light to reach the camera, but this results in the camera producing relatively low-quality photos.

It remains to be seen whether an in-display version of Face ID will be as effective or secure as the existing system, or if there will be any other trade-offs. Samsung is said to be working with Canada's OTI Lumionics to develop the technology.

If development is completed as planned, Samsung first plans to put the technology into what it calls the "Galaxy Z Fold5" next year, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

That's far away This isn't the first time there have been rumors of an under-screen Face ID coming to the iPhone. Prominent analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a research note in April 2021 that he expected Apple to adopt under-screen Face ID in at least one new iPhone model launched in 2023, but he did not provide any further details at the time. Display industry consultant Ross Young also claims that Face ID won’t be moved below the display until at least 2023.
