What do 'Runtime Notifications' mean in the iPhone Shortcuts app?
Apple’s new iOS 15.4 Beta 1 update brings a bunch of new features, some essential, some ancillary, but they all serve someone or other in the Apple community. While some of these features are hidden because they only concern a small percentage of users, the new Notify When Run feature caught our attention.
Users who like to personalize their iPhone experience know how useful this little toggle button can be. After all, we haven't forgotten about the unnecessary notifications that have had to be removed over the years for shortcuts that had your permission.
Read our tutorial to learn more about this new feature and decide whether it's an essential feature or something you can live without.
What does "runtime notification" in Shortcuts app mean?
For years, Apple users have been frustrated with the Shortcuts app on iPhone. In a weird technical glitch, the app requires your permission to run the personal automations you create within it. This doesn't make sense, does it? Why Apple asks you for permission for something you create yourself.
This is because the "Ask before running" option is enabled by default. So you will be asked to grant permission every time the shortcut is triggered. At least that's until we get the tweaks brought by the iOS 15.4 beta 1 update.
However, there is another sub-option within Ask before running called Notify when running. When this feature is enabled, the Shortcuts app will execute the automation you create and show you notifications for the same without requiring any input from you (clicking on the notification).
The potential problem is that these notifications can pile up over time, making the entire experience clunky and inconvenient, defeating the main purpose of the Shortcuts app.
How does "Runtime Notification" work?
Fast forward to 2022 and a new update has answered your (well, our) prayers. Apple has finally decided to offer a dedicated toggle button that can be used to turn notifications for personal automations on or off.
You now have access to the new Runtime Notifications button, which can be used to turn on or off notifications that notify you every time a shortcut or automation is triggered.
Not only can you turn off notifications (by turning off the Ask before running option), but you can also choose whether you still want to be notified when the shortcut is triggered, without requiring any input from you (by turning on the Runtime Notifications option).
In short, we now have a way to notify the execution of a shortcut without having to click on the notification. This makes the process as seamless as ever.
What shortcuts can I disable notifications for?
As we discussed in the previous section, all shortcuts and personal automation types that have the "Ask before running" option also have the "Runtime Notification" option hidden . As for which automated notifications you can disable, here's a detailed list:
- Time, Alarm, Sleep
- When Carplay is connected
- Turn on/off App, when turning airplane mode on/off
- Turn low power mode on/off, when battery level is above/below/equal to X%, when my iPhone is connected to power
- Turn on/off Do Not Disturb, turn on/off Personal, turn on/off Work
- When my iPhone recognizes the sound
However, you cannot This feature is used for all automation types, especially location automation, such as "When I arrive at the gym" and "When I leave work."
Connection automation such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC also does not have a Ask before running toggle button.
How to use the Runtime Notification feature on iPhone

FAQ
Can I use runtime notifications to disable notifications for old shortcuts?
Yes. You can disable notifications for old shortcuts using Notifications while running. In fact, it doesn't matter how old the shortcut or automation is, what matters is that the "Ask before running" option is visible for that particular automation. For a list of shortcuts you can use to disable notifications, see the list in this tutorial.
Will "Runtime Notifications" disable notifications for all shortcuts?
Can't. Most shortcuts provide runtime notifications individually, and you must disable this option individually for each automation or shortcut for which you want to disable notifications. However, keep in mind that this option is not available for every automation type.
Can I sync my shortcuts with iCloud?
Personal Automations cannot be shared via iCloud (by shared we mean synced). Even if you try, you can't back up these automations using iCloud. However, iCloud does allow you to sync shortcuts so you don't have to reset them every time you use a new device or reset the same device.
