New Microsoft document reveals next major Windows 11 update

Windows 11 testers may soon start getting near-final results from the next major feature update, codenamed Sun Valley 2. Currently, Windows 11 is receiving early builds from the active development channel (rs_prerelease), and is ultimately expected to be designated either the "Sun Valley 2" or "Windows 11 22H2" release.

Currently, testers are receiving builds from the Dev Channel, but Microsoft executives have confirmed that the current version is not related to a specific feature update. This technically means that current and upcoming preview features or improvements may or may not ship with the final version of Windows 11 22H2.

The Windows 11 Dev Channel currently has some changes to the desktop, Settings app, and more. Microsoft may take some, all, or unused features from existing rs_prerelease builds and move them to any Windows 11 release—October 2022, October 2023, or later.

According to sources familiar with development, major changes to the taskbar and other areas of the operating system should start showing up in future preview builds.

Additionally, a new document has surfaced online suggesting that the main base of Windows 11's current development branch will be declared internally as "feature complete" by March 4. Note that this doesn't mean Microsoft will stop adding features to preview builds in the Dev Channel.

On April 4, Windows 11 Nickel builds will be declared "Configuration Complete," meaning no breaking changes will be introduced.

Notably, the document reveals two deadlines that are subject to change.

Smooth Transition to Windows 11 22H2 Releases

Some improvements in current or upcoming releases will be added to the release branch of this year's big update (called Windows 11 22H2 or Sun Valley 2 - please Remember, the tech giant only releases major updates once a year).

According to previous reports, work on the Windows 11 22H2 feature update is expected to be completed before the summer, but future preview builds will continue to suffer from a series of glitches. This is because the Beta channel will get new features later and more details will be shared in the near future.

On the other hand, Windows 10 should receive another minor feature update similar to the November 2021 Update. Microsoft has confirmed that it is focusing on bug fixes and underlying improvements for Windows 10, rather than any new features, which will be retained for Windows 11.

Still, some noteworthy changes will be added to Windows 10 through monthly cumulative updates and Microsoft Store updates.
