On Thursday, Apple stopped signing iOS 15.3, effectively preventing users running iOS 15.3.1 or later from downgrading.

The end of iOS 15.3 code signing comes approximately eight days after Apple released iOS 15.3.1 to the public.

在 iOS 15.3.1 发布后,Apple 停止了 iOS 15.3 代码签名

#iOS 15.3.1 is a minor update that contains bug fixes and security patches. One notable addition in the update is a fix for a WebKit vulnerability that could allow maliciously crafted web content to lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple said it is aware of reports that the vulnerability may have been exploited in the wild.

The iOS 15.3 update, which was released in January, is no longer available as of Thursday. Like the current version, it focuses primarily on low-level improvements and bug fixes.

After releasing a new iOS version, Apple typically stops signing legacy code to protect customers from malicious actors trying to exploit newly discovered vulnerabilities. Preventing users from downloading old code also allows Apple to keep more iOS devices on the latest, feature-rich software.

With code signing discontinued, iOS 15.3.1 is now the only viable software update for iPhone and iPad users. The Cupertino tech giant is currently beta testing iOS 15.4, which includes updates to Face ID and a framework for Apple's upcoming Tap to Pay With iPhone.
