Microsoft releases new automatic HDR feature for Game Bar in Windows 11

Microsoft today announced new Auto HDR features on Windows 11, and some of the new features will work with the latest Xbox Game Bar in the Microsoft Store. The company actually introduced Auto High Dynamic Range or Auto HDR technology in Windows 10 previews back in 2021, but unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, these new features are only available on Windows 11.

Some new features such as multi-GPU support including NvidiaSLI and AMD CrossFire are also available today, but only in Windows 11 Beta and Dev Insider channel builds.

Game Bar Auto HDR Intensity Slider

If you download the latest Xbox from the Microsoft Store Game Bar, available today to all Windows 11 users.

The Auto HDR Intensity slider lets you control how vivid and bright you want the colors in your game to be using Auto HDR. In games with extremely bright or dark colors, you can adjust the slider to your liking for the best Auto HDR experience. If you drag the slider all the way to the left, you'll get the minimum intensity, which is equivalent to turning off Auto HDR, and if you drag the slider all the way to the right, you'll get the full intensity of Auto HDR.

To open the Xbox Game Bar, you can use the shortcut Win G. To use the intensity slider, navigate to the Xbox Game Bar and click the Settings button. In Settings, click on the Game Features section. In that section, you'll see a button that says "Adjust HDR Strength." When you click the button, a popup will appear with a strength slider. If you want it to stay on your Game Bar overlay, you can pin it by pressing the pin button in the upper right corner. This allows you to control the intensity of colors in your game.

Please note that this slider only applies to games with automatic HDR, not games with existing native HDR. Intensity levels are saved for each game, meaning you can set a certain intensity level for AHDR for a specific game and it won't affect any automatic HDR settings in other games. The Auto HDR slider remembers your previous settings the next time you play the same game.

Finally, we heard your feedback about too many automatic HDR notifications. If you find that Auto HDR notifications are distracting from your gameplay, you can turn them off in settings. Open the Windows Settings app and navigate to System, then navigate to Notifications. There you will see a list of notifications from the app and other senders. Find an Auto HDR and switch the toggle to Off if you want to turn off notifications. We also offer the option to change settings so that notifications stay on but don't play sounds or display notification banners.
