iPhone 15 Pro is expected to feature a periscope lens with up to 10x optical zoom

At least one iPhone 15 model launching in 2023 will feature a periscope camera system, adding optical zoom.

With the periscope system, light entering the telephoto lens on the back of the iPhone is reflected by a tilted mirror onto the camera's image sensor. The change in the direction in which light travels will allow Apple to fit a longer telephoto setting into the iPhone, allowing users to zoom in further without any blur.

Rumors of an iPhone equipped with a periscope lens have been circulating since early 2020 and that the periscope lens would be a feature of the iPhone 14 Pro, but now it looks like we’ll have to wait until next year’s iPhone 15 Pro.

There are already a few Android smartphones with periscope lenses, including Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra and Huawei's P40 Pro. Both devices feature up to 10x optical zoom, and the iPhone 15 Pro could follow suit by adding a periscope lens. Meanwhile, iPhone 13 Pro models are limited to 3x optical zoom.
