To put it bluntly, let’s look at the design of the new Mac Studio It looks like three Mac minis stacked on top of each other. It has the same physical dimensions as Apple's popular Mac mini, but is significantly taller to accommodate the cooling system required for the M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips inside.
Although the Mac Studio is larger than the Mac mini, the design of the Mac Studio is impressive considering the power inside. Apple says the machines have a footprint of just 7.7 inches and a height of just 3.7 inches. It has an all-aluminum chassis with rounded edges and a black Apple logo on top.
It features what Apple describes as an "innovative thermal design" with a dual-sided blower system. You'll find more than 4,000 perforations on the back and bottom of the Mac Studio case, which Apple says help channel air through internal components for cooling purposes.
Mac Studio is only available in Silver. Along with the launch of Mac Studio, Apple also announced a new silver and black version of its Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. These are designed to pair with a Mac Studio and matching Studio Display, but are sold separately.
Mac Studio features a wide selection of ports and connection options, more than any other recent Apple desktop computer. Here are the ports you'll find on the back of your Mac Studio:
On the front of the Mac Studio, you'll find two USB-C ports for extra ease accessed connection. For Mac Studio configurations powered by the M1 Pro Max chip, these ports have USB-C connection speeds of 10Gb/s. However, Mac Studio configurations with M1 Ultra support Thunderbolt 4 connections at 40Gb/s.
You'll also find an SD card slot on the front of the Mac mini. Apple calls this a UHS-II SD card slot, which means it supports speeds up to 312MB/s.
Finally, Mac Studio also supports some of the latest wireless connectivity stands. This includes WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.
Where Mac Studio really shines, however, is in its performance. Apple is selling the Mac Studio with two different chips: M1 Max and M1 Ultra. The M1 Max was previously available on 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models released in 2021, but the M1 Ultra is an entirely new chip that (as of launch date) is only available in Mac Studio.
The M1 Ultra is essentially two M1 chips connected using a technology Apple calls Ultra Fusion. Apple says this enables a chip design with 114 billion transistors, "the most ever in a personal computer chip."
What kind of performance can this achieve? Apple has some impressive stats when it comes to the M1 Ultra vs. Intel chips: Up to 3.8x better CPU performance compared to the fastest 27-inch iMac with a 10-core processor.
Has a 10-core CPU , M1 Max chip with 24-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine
Like As usual, these configurations are largely interchangeable, and you can choose to upgrade specific aspects of Mac Studio, but not all. The maximum capacity of available unified memory is 128GB, while the maximum capacity of SSD storage is 8TB.
The Mac Studio, like the Mac mini, is pretty barebones when it comes to accessories. In the box, no matter which configuration you choose, you'll only receive the Mac Studio itself and a power cord.
This means you will need to bring your own keyboard, mouse/trackpad, monitor, and any other peripherals you may need or want. Fortunately, Apple did release a new Studio Display to complement the Mac Studio, but its base configuration option is a bit pricey, retailing for $1,599.
In the ongoing transition from Intel to Apple Silicon, Mac Studio is a very interesting addition to Apple’s Mac lineup. In fact, it represents a machine that Apple may not be able to release using Intel processors due to thermal issues.
The machine also occupies an odd spot in Apple's current Mac lineup, serving as the high-end option for the Mac mini — and the smaller, Apple silicon-powered version of the Mac Pro. Another interesting tidbit is that Apple doesn't (yet?) have a 27-inch in its lineup. This means that if you want a more powerful Apple Silicon desktop than the M1, your best bet is the new Mac Studio paired with the new Studio Display.
