1. JDK1.3 introduces the TimerTask tool into the Java language. This tool allows you to perform tasks on a scheduled or delayed basis.

2. The implementation of Timer is very simple. It creates a timer thread and builds a queue waiting for events based on the execution time.

The TimerTask thread is a daemon thread, so it does not prevent the program from exiting. Because timing events execute in the Timer thread, you must ensure proper synchronization of access to any data items used in tasks in the Timer thread.

Example

public static void main(String[] args) {
        Timer timer = new Timer();

        final CalculatePrimes calculator = new CalculatePrimes();
        calculator.start();

        timer.schedule(
                new TimerTask() {
                    public void run()
                    {
                        calculator.finished = true;
                    }
                }, TEN_SECONDS);
    }
