Microsoft has been working hard to make its apps ready for Windows 11. The company has already updated native apps like Media Player and MS Paint, and now Outlook is also seeing an update being prepared for public testing.
As we reported earlier this year, Microsoft has been secretly developing a new email client for Windows 11, Windows 10, and macOS. From the deleted worklist/document, we know that the project is known internally as "Project Monarch", also known as One Outlook.
Microsoft’s new app is essentially a reboot of Outlook for the website, with deeper Windows 11 integration. Currently, there are several ways to access your work and personal email. The company offers several email clients such as Microsoft Store-based Outlook UWP and Outlook desktop app for Windows.
Store-based Outlook was originally released on Windows 8 and later updated with Fluent Design on Windows 10. Currently, Outlook UWP lags behind Outlook Web and Outlook Desktop in terms of functionality and performance, drawing criticism from the community.
Microsoft obviously can't maintain so many Outlook clients, which is why the company decided it was time to create "One Outlook." Back in May 2021, we discovered a download link for an unreleased Outlook client, but it wasn't working at the time.
A server-side update has been released that allows anyone with a Microsoft work account to log in.
As you can see in the screenshots above and below, Microsoft’s new The Outlook app is based on Outlook.com, but it has deeper Windows 11 integration and uses Microsoft Edge's Fluent Design.
The new app is part of the tech giant’s ongoing “One Outlook” project. Since the app is based on Web Components and Edge, Microsoft wants to integrate all Mail apps into it.
One Outlook will allow users to manage their mail across Windows 10 and Windows 11 without having to install another mail app.
According to sources, Outlook web will also debut on macOS, which makes sense since web apps can run anywhere. Using the same email application on all desktop platforms will also reduce confusion because users won't have to teach themselves how to use Outlook on different platforms.
New One Outlook isn’t available to everyone yet and is currently only available for work or education accounts. It will likely be officially announced as we get closer to the Microsoft Build developer conference.
