Microsoft confirms Windows 11's 2023 update is called SV3 – what to expect

We know that Windows 11’s first major update of 2022 is scheduled to roll out later this year, and it’s called version 22H2 aka Sun Valley 2. For the uninitiated, Sun Valley was the codename for the original Windows 11 version, and Microsoft apparently plans to keep the codename for the two subsequent big releases.

Windows 11 23H2 may be Microsoft’s best bet to take on Apple and Google in the tablet and touchscreen markets.

While Windows 11 22H2 is gearing up for Fall 2022, Microsoft is already working on a major update in 2023, and we're already seeing changes to the Dev Channel. Next year's update is apparently called version 23H2 (Sun Valley 3/SV3), with references to SV3 found in the latest preview build.

As you can see in the screenshot below, Windows 11 CU23H2 is referenced in the latest version which is Copper (Late 2023). The current Windows 11 22H2 update is set to roll out in the fall of 2022, and is apparently codenamed "Nickel" internally.

Next year's Windows 11 updates will be called "Copper" internally as well as "Sun Valley 3." At Microsoft, it's normal for a product to have different codenames because there are multiple departments working on different areas of the same update.

The above screenshot refers to "SV3", which is short for Sun Valley 3. The company previously referred to Sun Valley 2 as "SV2", so it's fair to assume that the "SV3" in the above code is a reference to Sun Valley 3.

For those who don't know, Microsoft has Feature updates are changed to yearly, meaning there will only be one feature update this year and another next year.

Feature updates are now released in the second half of the year, which is why the last digit of WIndows 11 versions always ends with "2".

Theoretically, Windows 11 version 23H2 is in the early stages of development, but new features may start appearing in an upcoming preview build later this month or next month.

Windows 11 23H2 Expectations

Windows 11 23H2 will prove that Microsoft’s tablet ambitions will not be deterred, according to sources familiar with the development.

Microsoft rival Apple has had huge success with tablets and iPad software, but the Windows tech giant has yet to achieve the same success in the industry.

While Windows 8 is a pretty good tablet operating system, the operating system and tablets have been largely ignored. Windows 10 addresses the concerns of desktop and laptop users while retaining some of the tablet-friendly features of Windows 8, such as gestures and Live Tiles.

Unlike Windows 10, Windows 11 does not come with tablet mode. With the new operating system, Microsoft is trying to strike a balance between desktops and tablets, and Windows 11 continues to run better on tablet devices.

Next year’s Windows 11 23H2 update may release even more improvements, including a tablet-friendly taskbar.
