Available as a free technology preview, the 2H22 version of Fusion will finally allow Apple silicon Mac users to download and use Windows on their machines through virtualization.

VMware Fusion Tech Preview 为 Apple Silicon Mac 带来了 Windows 11
Features include Windows 11 support with 2D GFX and networking, VMtools installation for Windows on Apple silicon machines, improved Linux support on Apple silicon machines, and more.

  • Windows 11 on Intel and Apple Silicon with 2D GFX and Networking
  • VMtools Installation for Windows 11 GOS on M1
  • Improved for "M1" Linux support
  • 3D graphics hardware acceleration and OpenGL 4.3* in Linux VM (requires Linux 5.19 and Mesa 22.1.3)
  • Virtual TPM device
  • Fast encryption
  • Universal Binaries

While the new features were designed with Windows 11 in mind, VMware says the tools can also be used with other virtual machines. Fusion on Apple chip devices is still a work in progress and comes with some limitations to be aware of..

  • Fusion does not support running virtual machines across different architectures. (i.e. there is no x86_64 VM on the ‌M1‌ Mac).
  • macOS virtual machines are beyond the scope of this release, but we are working on it.
  • Ubuntu 20.04.4 and 22.04 for arm64 are currently unable to boot (Ubuntu 20.04.4 builds from July 5th) We are working on a fix for this issue.

VMware said it is seeking feedback from users to resolve issues and add new features in preparation for more formal support later this year. During the beta period, VMware Fusion will be free to use. VMware Fusion Tech Preview can be downloaded from the VMware official website.
