Microsoft is finally testing tabs in Windows 11 Notepad, which means it will soon be available to regular users of the operating system.
In December last year, a Microsoft employee accidentally posted a tweet revealing the company's plans to improve its Notepad software. The "Confidential" tweet shows a screenshot of Notepad with the label. Now, it's officially available in the Dev Channel for Windows Insiders.
Similar to the regular browser, the Notepad update (version 11.2212.33.0) adds support for multiple tabs. In addition to allowing users to "create, manage, and organize multiple files in a single Notepad window," you can also drag the current individual tab out of a group to separate it and open a new window. Related to this, you can also use a new option to open files in a new tab or window.
Making this update even more convenient is a new keyboard shortcut pack for managing tabs. It also introduces unsaved file management improvements, according to the software company. Some of these features are the same as those found in some Office applications, such as automatically generating a tab's file name based on its content and "refreshing" the unsaved change indicator. Unfortunately, while it's nice to have these new features coming to Notepad's tabs, Microsoft notes that Insiders should still expect some issues, especially when it comes to shortcuts.
"We're aware that there are several issues that may impact your experience with this preview," said Dave Grochocki, lead program manager on the Windows Inbox Apps team. "Some users may experience issues with certain keyboard shortcuts, and we will continue to optimize performance to ensure Notepad continues to meet our high standards for performance, reliability, and compatibility."
If Microsoft has decided to officially release the feature to the entire Windows 11 user base, and Notepad will be the next Windows app to get the feature after File Explorer. Nonetheless, the concept of tabs is not new in the Windows platform. Years ago, the software company tested it on all Windows 10 apps under the name "Sets" and later canceled it. Now that tabs are back, they may be coming to other Windows apps soon too.
