Oracle 11g RAC installation

Oracle Database 11g RAC (Real Application Clusters) is a high availability solution that uses multiple independent server computers to form a cluster and combines them into a centralized , High availability database system. It provides many excellent features, including automatic failover, dynamic resource allocation and load balancing, etc. These features provide good support for enterprise-level and large-scale database applications.

In this article, we will discuss how to install Oracle 11g RAC. We will cover the following:

  1. Prerequisites
  2. Download Oracle software
  3. Prepare the server
  4. Install Oracle 11g Grid Infrastructure
  5. Install Oracle 11g Database

Prerequisites:

Before installing Oracle 11g RAC, the following requirements need to be met:

1. Sufficient hardware resources: at least Two servers with the same specifications and configuration, sufficient memory (16GB or more recommended) and storage space.

2. Network: There should be a dedicated network for communication between database nodes. This network should have sufficient bandwidth and stability.

3. Security: There must be a user with administrator rights and a protected password.

4. Operating system: It is required to install the correct operating system (here, Oracle Linux is taken as an example).

5. Configuration: Correct hardware, network and software configuration are required to ensure the normal operation of Oracle 11g RAC.

Download Oracle software

To install Oracle 11g RAC, you first need to download and install the software for Oracle 11g Grid Infrastructure and Oracle 11g Database. Oracle's official website provides download links for these software, but authorized access is required before downloading. Once you have the download link, you can save it to your local machine.

Preparing the server

Before installing Oracle 11g RAC, you need to prepare the server. In order to ensure the high availability of the database system, at least two servers with the same specifications and configuration, sufficient memory (16GB or more recommended) and storage space should be prepared. A dedicated network is required for communication between servers, and virtual IP (VIP) addresses can be configured using a single network card or multiple network cards.

Before installing Oracle 11g RAC, you also need to ensure the following configuration:

  1. Install the correct operating system (Oracle Linux is used here).
  2. Make sure the firewall on the server is turned off.
  3. Use the root user to log in to the server for installation.

The above configuration needs to be performed on all servers. Make sure this is set on all servers.

Install Oracle 11g Grid Infrastructure

1. Unzip the Oracle 11g Grid Infrastructure software package and enter the "grid" directory and run the "runInstaller" file.

2. Enter the installation wizard and select "Install and Configure Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster" in the "Select Installation Option" window. Then click Next as shown in the image below.

3. In the "Select Installation Type" window, select "Advanced Installation", as shown in the figure below.

4. In the "Select Product Languages" window, you can select the installed language.

5. In the "Specify Install Location" window, you can select the location and name of the Oracle software to be installed. Click Next to continue.

6. In the "Grid Plug and Play Configuration" window, select "Configure Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster" to enable cluster configuration and management. Click Next to continue.

7. In the "Cluster Nodes" window, enter the name and IP address of the server node where Oracle 11g RAC needs to be installed. Click Add to add all nodes. Click Next to continue.

8. In the "SSH Connectivity" window, perform an SSH connection test to ensure that passwordless SSH connections can be made between each node as the root user. Click Next to continue.

9. In the "Specify Public Virtual IP Addresses" window, set the public IP address and subnet mask for cluster management. Click Next to continue.

10. In the "Specify Private Virtual IP Addresses" window, set the private IP address and subnet mask used for inter-node communication. Click Next to continue.

11. In the "Specify SCAN" window, set the SCAN IP address and subnet mask, as well as the SCAN name and port number. SCAN will be used to handle communication between clients and the cluster. Click Add to add a SCAN address and click Next to continue.

12. In the "Configure Automatic Storage Management" window, select "Configure Automatic Storage Management (ASM)" and set the name, disk path and redundancy level of the ASM disk group. Here we select "Normal Redundancy" and add four disk paths (/dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd and /dev/sde). Click Next to continue.

13. Create an ASM disk group in the "Create ASM Disk Groups" window and click the Create button, as shown in the figure below.

14. Enter the "Create ASM Disk Group" window and set the name and disk permissions of the ASM Disk Group, as shown in the figure below. Click OK to complete creation.

15. Click the Add button to add the ASM disk, as shown in the figure below. Here add four disks: /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd and /dev/sde.

16. Click OK to add the ASM disk.

  1. In the "Summary" window, confirm the required configuration and click Install to start the installation.
  2. During the installation process, each node will be verified. After all nodes have completed verification, the installation and configuration of Grid Infrastructure will begin. When finished, click Close to close the window.

Install Oracle 11g Database

  1. Unzip the Oracle 11g Database software package and enter the "database" directory, and run the "runInstaller" file.
  2. Enter the installation wizard and select "Install Database Software Only" in the "Select Installation Option" window. Then click Next.
  3. In the "Select Product Languages" window, you can select the installed languages. Click Next to continue.
  4. In the "Select Database Edition" window, select Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition. Click Next to continue.
  5. In the "Specify Home Details" window, set the name and location of the Oracle instance. Click Next to continue.
  6. In the "Specify Cluster Configuration" window, select "Configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server" to use the existing Grid Infrastructure configuration. Click Next to continue.
  7. In the "Select Database Configuration" window, select "Real Application Clusters database installation". Then click Next to continue.
  8. In the "Specify Cluster Name and Node Information" window, select all nodes with Grid Infrastructure installed. Click Add to select all nodes and click Next to continue.
  9. In the "Specify Database Configuration Options" window, select the database type, character set and password that need to be created. Click Next to continue.
  10. In the "Specify ASM Disk Group Locations" window, specify the ASM disk group and data file location for the database. Select the ASM disk group we created when installing Grid Infrastructure and specify the data file path. Click Next to continue.
  11. In the "Specify Network Configuration" window, set the listener name and protocol. Click Next to continue.
  12. In the "Specify Database Management Options" window, choose whether to install management tools. Click Next to continue.
  13. Finally confirm all configuration information again. Click Install to start the installation.
  14. The RAC database will be automatically created and configured during the installation process. After the installation is complete, click Close to exit the installation wizard.

So far, we have learned how to install Oracle 11g RAC. Installing Oracle 11g RAC requires careful planning and preparation. With the right methods and procedures, you will be able to set up a high-availability database solution in an enterprise or large data center.
