Microsoft is aware of an issue in Windows 11 22H2 Task Manager blocking the "Safe Eject Media" feature and displaying the error message "Problem ejecting USB mass storage device - This device is currently in use." Close any programs or windows that may be using the device and try again."
Microsoft said in 2019 that it had changed the way Windows handles USB storage drives. This way, users do not have to select "Safely Remove Hardware" option, you can remove modern USB devices. Despite the potential bug in Windows 11 22H2, people still rely on this feature.
In the past, you needed to first use the eject option on the taskbar or Safely Remove Hardware option. When you click this option, you are basically notifying Windows that you are about to remove the USB device and should stop any operations on it. This ensures that your data on the storage drive remains safe .
Theoretically you can remove the USB drive at any time and in most cases it will have no effect, but if the disk write cache is operational while the drive is unplugged then If you're really unlucky, you might suffer data loss. Fortunately, Windows 11 is set to "Quick Removal" by default and you can easily remove the drive without losing any data.
Using "Safely Remove Hardware" is redundant since you can just unplug the USB drive without worrying about data loss. However, a bug in Windows 11 actually prevents you from using this option if you use it process, and will not let you safely eject the hardware, as shown in the screenshot above.
