Now widely available is Windows 11, and most users can already enjoy it. Microsoft is allowing users to continue using Windows 10 even as Windows 11 rolls out. Should you upgrade to Windows 11 or stick with Windows 10?

The main reason why users need to update their desktop operating system to a major new operating system version before Windows 11 is released is to continue to get new and exciting features. Additionally, regular security updates are required to update to major new operating systems.

Despite the release of Windows 11, Microsoft has no plans to remove features or security updates from Windows 10 until at least 2025. Microsoft will provide security updates for older devices to provide peace of mind to users who are unable or unwilling to upgrade to Windows 11 Version 21H2.

If you're confused about your update options, this tutorial will try to highlight the reasons you might want to stick with Windows 10 and help answer the question of whether you should update to Windows 11.

List of features missing in Windows 11

There’s no doubt that Windows 11 comes with several design improvements, but if you update today, you’ll lose a lot of features.

Start Menu

As you may already know, Windows 11 ditches live tiles for static icons, and it is no longer possible to change the size of app icons placed in Start . You can't group icons or even change the size of the Start menu itself.

Microsoft has also removed the option to open the Start menu in full screen.

Here is a list of all the missing features in New Start:

  • The App Folders feature is currently unavailable, but is set to return with Windows 11 version 22H2.
  • Cannot delete pinned apps or just view all apps.
  • You cannot pin the Settings page to Start.
  • You cannot delete recommended sections.
  • Badges are not supported.

Taskbar

Needless to say, the worst feature of Windows 11 is its new taskbar.

The taskbar is now constrained to the bottom of the display, and it's unclear whether that feature will return. Apps also can't be pinned to the taskbar if you just drag and drop them, which is odd since it's been advertised that Windows 11 will offer better productivity.

Here is a list of all the missing features in the new taskbar:

  • You cannot change the size and position of the taskbar.
  • You cannot ungroup tags.
  • You can't drag and drop files to the taskbar, but this feature will be restored later this year. Additionally, you will be able to drag and drop app icons to pin to the taskbar, but it only works with desktop apps.
  • You cannot disable system icons such as sounds in the tray.
  • Microsoft has removed the full context menu for the taskbar, so the option to launch Task Manager is missing.
  • Toolbar support has been removed - adding addresses, links, desktops and custom folders is no longer possible.
  • Windows 10’s battery pop-up feature allows users to quickly change power modes. This has been removed in Windows 11.
  • Microsoft has removed the ability to view or add calendar events.

Windows Explorer

File Explorer is almost the same, but Windows 11 is currently missing some features:

  • No refresh option in context menu . This can be a problem because Explorer sometimes fails to refresh automatically.
  • The new context menu does not support all features of the classic version and is slower than usual.
  • Quick Access Toolbar has been removed.
  • RTM builds do not support folder previews, but this will be fixed in the 22H2 release.
