Caltech accuses Apple’s smartphones, tablets and Apple Watch, as well as Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi chips, of infringing its data transmission patents. In addition to Apple and Qualcomm, Caltech has also sued Microsoft, Samsung Electronics, Dell Technologies, HP and other companies, accusing them of infringing on the same patented technology.

According to the editor’s understanding, in 2020, the grassroots court made a judgment on this case, requiring Apple to compensate California Institute of Technology US$837.8 million, while Qualcomm requested compensation of US$270 million. Apple and Qualcomm have appealed, requesting a retrial on the compensation amount, but have not set a timetable for the retrial.

Although Apple and Qualcomm believed they had the right to challenge the validity of Caltech’s communications patents, their requests were rejected by an appeals court. The appeals court noted that Apple could have submitted requests and arguments to the U.S. Patent Office to reexamine whether the Caltech patent was valid, but it failed to do so.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that because Apple and Qualcomm were unable to conduct relevant arguments during the patent review stage, their claims were not supported. According to Deputy Minister Prelogar, the Federal Court of Appeal interpreted the law correctly.

Caltech has not yet commented on this judicial opinion. Relevant personnel from Qualcomm and Apple, as well as the Office of Deputy Minister Prelogar, did not provide further comments.
