According to the editor’s understanding, the Japan Patent Office has conducted statistics on major countries and regions including Japan, the United States, Europe and China (the data is tentative). In the field of storage batteries, the number of patents originating from Japan was approximately 2,300 in 2020, an increase of approximately 200 from 2010, and has continued to grow rapidly in recent years. Except for 2014, Japan has obtained more than 2,000 patents every year since 2010. Currently, South Korea ranks second and China ranks third and are catching up closely. From a corporate perspective, as of 2021, South Korea's LG Group has the largest number of applications, reaching 5,355, followed by South Korea's Samsung Group with 4,976.

Data show that China accounts for 70% of the top ten companies and institutions that have obtained valid patents, while Japan and the United States account for 20% and 10% respectively. The Chinese Academy of Sciences applied for 395 patents on the list, followed by Toyota of Japan with 236 and Central South University with 234. However, judging from the comprehensive index, Japan and the United States have more advantages in patent quality. In the field of sodium-ion batteries, which are the first choice for new batteries, the American Global Graphene Group ranks first; and in terms of fluorine-ion batteries with development potential, Toyota has an advantage.

In general, the number of international patent applications in the field of storage batteries is gradually increasing, with Japan leading the number of applications and China also actively catching up. Countries' investment in battery technology research and development and innovation capabilities, as well as the growth in the number of patents, have an important impact on future energy storage and sustainable development.
