According to news on June 2, project selection for the LibreOffice open source office suite has been completed in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2023. In response to user requests for new features and improvements, the Document Foundation undertook the project.

Future versions of LibreOffice will include many new features and improvements that users have been waiting for. One of them is support for import and export of APNG (Animated PNG) images. Compared with GIF images, APNG supports more colors and translucency, is compatible with PNG images, and is an animation format. Additionally, because APNG is supported by all major web browsers, users now have wider access to this feature.

Add a search field to LibreOffice's Options panel to satisfy another user-desired new feature. A search bar is added to the tool options dialog box to enable users to easily find various configuration options and modify them according to their needs. This improvement will greatly improve user convenience.

According to the editor’s understanding, future LibreOffice versions will also improve PGP/GPG encryption support. Currently, this feature is still experimental in LibreOffice, but there are plans to improve it to make it easier for users to find the correct key to encrypt a document. In addition, adding asynchronous queries to improve performance and enabling features such as smart search and upgraded filtering will further enhance the usefulness of encryption capabilities.

In addition, future versions of LibreOffice will also introduce a test selection method based on machine learning. This approach intelligently selects tests to run in the continuous integration chain, thereby reducing test load. In addition, there are plans for Writer’s UNO API to write C unit tests, which are derived from OpenOffice.org and written in Java.

These new features and improvements will be implemented by various students during Google Summer of Code 2023 and are planned for release in future LibreOffice releases. Although these features are not expected to be available in the mid-August 2023 release of LibreOffice Appearing in version 7.6, but expected to be implemented in 2024.
