iOS 17's standby mode turns a charging iPhone into a home hub
In iOS 17 Apple is introducing Standby Mode, a new display experience designed for charging iPhones in a horizontal orientation. In this position, the iPhone is able to display a series of full-screen widgets, turning it into a useful home hub.
Standby mode automatically activates on iPhone running iOS 17 when placed horizontally on the charger. You can view time, weather, calendar, music controls, photos, and more.
You can swipe left or right through the available standby options and long press or swipe up/down to customize. For example, you can choose from analog view, digital view, bubble font, and daylight view, where the background color changes based on time as time passes.
There are options to add home screen widgets to the main standby view, which is the first option you see when activating standby. In this view, you can select two widgets to display side by side to control HomeKit products, view calendar events, follow the stock market, check device battery life, check the weather, and more.
If Live Activity is active, it will appear full screen, as will the results of Siri requests.
At night, if the room you are in is dark, the standby mode will dim so that it is not distracting while sleeping at night. Standby mode is similar to Nightstand mode on the Apple Watch and does much the same thing.
Please note that for iPhone to continuously display information, you need iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max equipped with always-on display technology. On other iPhones, it takes a tap to see what's on the screen.
